History

Hume Community Housing is a registered not-for-profit organisation established in 1994 when two small housing providers – Fairfield Rental Housing Co and Liverpool Rental Housing Association – were amalgamated.

The name ‘Hume’ was adopted as it marked the new organisations first address on the Hume Highway in Liverpool – one of Australia’s most important highways and the main thoroughfare connecting Sydney’s West and South West. Hume has since expanded to five offices in Parramatta, Fairfield, Claymore, Maitland and Raymond Terrace and employs over 150 people.

By 1999 we were the first organisation to be recognised for our three-year accreditation status against the National Community Housing Standards (NCHS), with500 properties under its management.  Later in 2014 Hume was awarded Tier 1 status and today manages around 4,700 properties in New South Wales (NSW).

Other early milestones were in 2006 when we introduced our Temporary Accommodation Program in partnership with the NSW Government, and in 2011 when we secured 260 National Rental Incentives through round four of the National Rental Affordability Scheme.

Much happened in 2017, we took on the management of 152 units at Telopea, creating a mix of social and affordable housing.  In this year we were also registered as a Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), welcoming over 550 NDIS participants into its tenancy and property management services.

A major achievement was In 2018 with Hume securing the largest social housing management transfer (SHMT) in Australia of over 2,000 properties located in the Hunter region. In that same year, we completed our first flagship development – the building of 60 social and affordable units with a purpose built-head office below in the heart of Fairfield.

By 2019 Hume was the first community housing provider to access a loan from the National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation (NHFIC).  Hume doubled in size expanding our footprint into regional NSW welcoming 4,000 new customers across the Hunter region under the SHMT program secured in 2018. We opened new offices in Maitland and Raymond Terrace creating regional employment opportunities for 55 people.

Also in 2019 we were announced as the successful bid tender for the Communities Plus redevelopment of Telopea together with Frasers Property Australia.  As mentioned above, since 2017 we have had a strong association with the community of Telopea where we own and manage three multi-story housing developments.

In 2020 Hume received $1.1 million over two years from the NSW Government to house and support people sleeping rough in South West Sydney making us part of the NSW State government’s state-wide Together Home Program, which supports customers living rough to be fast-tracked into long-term affordable housing as consistent with ‘Housing First' principles. This funding was topped up in 2021 when Hume secured additional funds of $2.9 million over two years, commencing 1 July 2021, expanding the program in South West Sydney into the Hunter region.

In 2021, Hunter region customers also benefitted when we secured just under $4 million of stimulus funding from the NSW State Government to upgrade 70 social housing properties. Works commenced in April 2021 and were successfully completed in record time by the end of June.
