Hume kicks off local bushfire safety day

The Hume barbeque provided an opportunity for Hume customers and their neighbours to socialise.

On Monday 30 November 2020, Hume kicked off its bushfire prevention work and clean up with a community event with a pop-up information tent, barbeque and skip bin in Philip Street, Raymond Terrace.

The community event was designed to help answer any questions local Hume customers and other local residents have on bushfire safety and help them complete Bushfire Survival Plans.

This also launched 12 days of clearing branches, trees, and flammable material around 120 Hume properties in the Raymond Terrace and Port Stephens areas. As part of this work, the team will also do small roof and wall repairs, clean gutters, mow lawns and help remove unwanted items in yards.

The initiative will provide peace of mind to Hume’s customers and their neighbours, by helping to keep them safe in the coming bushfire season.

On the ground was Hume’s Senior Housing and Community Manager Melissa Wiseman, who said it was important to connect with customers and neighbours to share bushfire safety information whilst providing an opportunity to say hello and share stories at a barbeque.

“Community is all important, and on top of the hard work the arborists and Hume’s team will be doing to keep property and people safe, having a get together and a chat about what is going on in the area and their Bushfire Survival Plan is equally as important,” she said.

“We really want to say a big thank you to those who organised the bushfire prevention work, plus our customers and local residents for really getting involved.”

A second bushfire preparation day will be held at Parkway Avenue, Raymond Terrace on Monday, 7 December.

A special thanks to the Port Stephens Examiner, who provided publicity and promoted the next event. Read the story here.
